Dear Residents,
We started this Year of the Ox with an aim to extend our
outreach in Jalan Kayu including the distribution of groceries
and hong baos to our needy residents. Particularly in the midst
of this economic downturn, we must continue to celebrate and
share as a community. As a country, we have reacted swiftly to
the crisis, and with our sound fundamentals, there are many
reasons for hope and confidence.
However, we must continue to be prudent, steer clear of
excesses, make lifestyle adjustments if necessary and live
within our means. In Jalan Kayu, we will continue to work
together to help our residents manage the effects of the
recession and face the challenges ahead.
The CCC has decided to distribute additional bursary awards in
the middle of this year to help families with educational
expenses. There are also many schemes to assist needy families,
provided by Comcare and the Central Singapore CDC. Families may
approach the Jalan Kayu CCC Welfare Committee, Hwi Yoh CC or
come forward during my Meet-the-People sessions for assistance.
The Resilience Package is also helping companies stay in
business and save as many jobs as possible. There are training
schemes to upgrade skills and schemes to create employment.
So take heart that while the outlook is grim, Singapore has been
through past recessions and emerged stronger because we are able
to work together and support each other as a family, as a
community and as a nation.
So, just like the Ox, we can overcome tough conditions, through
hard work and fortitude, to achieve success.
I started by saying that we must continue to remain confident
and find reasons to celebrate. Come June 21, we are holding our
annual Jalan Kayu Family Day at the Buangkok Green part of Jalan
Kayu. So come and join us for an entire morning of fun.
So while these are challenging times, we will continue in our
efforts to make Jalan Kayu an attractive and conducive living
environment where the kampong spirit lives on and where helping
hands will always be extended to any neighbours in need.
I look forward to meeting you.
